| Sewage pipes in domestic hook-ups mostly concern the pipe dimensions from 100 to 150 mm. These pipes often include curves in the access of 45°. Nevertheless milling and overhauling are still necessary, e.g. the removal of sediments, roots and shards. Restoration of a domestic hook-up by the means of in place pipe lining is usually impossible without the necessary preparatory milling work.
To allow our robot the passage of pipe curves, it is split into several modules, which are connected flexibly with each other. The milling module includes a cutter head with different attaching drills. The milling spindle is driven by an electric engine via a pliable wave. This construction principle permits a stronger engine outside the cutter head and also allows the cutter head to be held very small, which increases the sphere of action around the cutter head. The cutter head provides three degrees of movement, up/down, turn and a forward feed in axial direction. For milling the robot is clamped centrically in the pipe. Two cameras, a fixed one and a swivel-head-camera may be mounted.
The trailing module is the drive-train module, which moves the whole unit through the pipe. To increase the tractive force, the drive-train wheels are pneumatically pressed against the pipe wall. This module can be decoupled and replaced with a push rod.
Our curve-applicable robot is steered with a 100 m-long BUS-supply-line. Due to the low cable diameter, it is very light and pliable – an advantage for driving through the curves.
